The Truth About "Made in USA" Cabinet Claims

“Made in USA” and “American-built” are two of the most common phrases in cabinet marketing — and two of the easiest to stretch. Before you buy on the strength of that label, it’s worth knowing what it can actually mean.

Assembled Here Isn’t the Same as Built Here

A cabinet can be labeled “built in the USA” or “assembled in the USA” even when its parts — panels, shelves, hinges — were manufactured overseas and shipped in flat-packed for final assembly. That’s a meaningfully different product from one designed and built from raw material on U.S. soil.

The FTC’s “Made in USA” standard requires a product to be “all or virtually all” made domestically. A lot of cabinet marketing language is written specifically to sound like that claim without actually meeting it.

Why the Difference Shows Up Later, Not at Purchase

The gap between “assembled here” and “built here” usually isn’t visible on day one — it shows up over years of use, especially in a climate like Phoenix’s:

• Lower-grade imported wood and panel stock is more prone to warping in dry heat.
• Cheaper substrate materials don’t hold up as well to daily use over time.
• Parts sourced from different suppliers can result in slightly inconsistent finishes across a single kitchen.

Questions Worth Asking Before You Buy

You don’t need to take a marketing claim at face value. A few direct questions will tell you what you’re actually getting:

• Where are the panels, doors, and hardware actually manufactured — not just assembled?
• Is the company willing to walk you through their actual production process?
• Are the answers specific, or do they stay vague on sourcing?
