What "Custom" Actually Means in Cabinetry

“Custom” is one of the most overused words in cabinet sales. Depending on who’s selling it, it can mean anything from a fully designed-to-order kitchen to a stock cabinet in a color you picked from a chart. Knowing the difference is worth understanding before you buy.

Stock Cabinetry

Stock cabinets are mass-produced in a fixed range of sizes, usually in 3-inch width increments, with a limited set of door styles and finishes. They’re the fastest and least expensive option, but the layout has to bend to fit the cabinets — not the other way around. Fillers and gaps are common where standard sizes don’t quite match the space.

Semi-Custom Cabinetry

Semi-custom cabinets start from the same base sizing as stock cabinetry but add more size increments, door styles, and finish options, along with some modification options like added height or depth on certain cabinets. It’s a middle ground — more flexibility than stock, but still built around a manufacturer’s existing size system rather than your specific space.

Fully Custom Cabinetry

Fully custom cabinetry is designed and built for the specific space it’s going into — sized to your actual walls, appliances, and ceiling height rather than the nearest standard size. There’s no fixed catalog of sizes to work within; every dimension is a decision made for your project specifically. That also means storage is designed around what you’re actually storing, not a generic drawer stack sized to fit a standard box.

The difference shows up most clearly in awkward spaces — a corner, a low ceiling, an appliance that doesn’t match a standard opening. Stock and semi-custom cabinetry handle those situations with fillers, panels, and workarounds. Fully custom cabinetry is designed around the situation from the start, so there’s nothing to work around.

It’s also worth asking directly: is a “custom” cabinet built to your measurements, or selected from a range of sizes and adjusted to fit? The answer tells you which category you’re actually buying into.
